Meeting with NSW Labor Health Minister ‘constructive’ – Cansdell
04 June 2009
A meeting at Parliament House in Sydney on Wednesday afternoon with NSW Labor Health Minister John Della Bosca was constructive, according to Clarence Nationals MP Steve Cansdell.
“I set up the meeting with Clarence Valley Council Mayor Richie Williamson and Council General Manager Stuart McPherson specifically to discuss infrastructure funding shortfalls for the upgrades of Grafton and Maclean hospitals,” Mr Cansdell said.
“I am pleased to report we received a good hearing. Mr Della Bosca appeared well-briefed, interested in the subject and open to my invitation to visit the Clarence.”
“That is a marked and positive change from the attitude of his predecessors.”
“I am advised that we only need another $600,000 to supplement the federal grant for new operating theatres and the Accident and Emergency ward upgrade at Grafton Hospital and discussed this shortfall with the Minister.”
“I then told the Minister about the plight of nurses at Maclean, who are doing a great job in a difficult and unfair environment. The upgrade of the Maclean A&E would cost up to $400,000.”
“The meeting also included discussions about the promised Health One centre at Yamba and the widely recognised need for increased support for palliative care in the region.”
Mr Cansdell said he had not backed away from his steadfast opposition to the Government’s deep cuts to North Coast hospitals staffing.
“That issue is vital but fell outside the scope of this particular half-hour meeting,” he said.
